Specialist "Intern" Program

Description: Classic internship program for undergraduates interested in international affairs. Our program is about helping everyone get started on their specialization. If you are not 100% sure what your passion is or what you want to specialize in, this is the program for you.

Core focus: Research

Specialty: Choose from one of our 20 Policy Centers

Clients: Undergraduate and graduate students wanting to craft an International Affairs Specialty to enhance career mobility. You may have an idea of what you want to specialize in but you are not quite sure – this is the right option for you.

Commitment: 3 months (one semester)

Requirements:

  • Define your specialization

  • Start to build a brand around your specialization

  • Learn valuable research skills to help you have a productive career

Importance: We spend a lot of time teaching skills, tools, and techniques to help our Interns get better at researching. They can’t just pretend to be a policy specialist – they need to read more than their peers, they need to write more than their peers, and the best place to do that is through BIED Society. We help them network, study, research, and grow as an international affairs professional.

Young Professionals Program (YPP)

Description: An Internship, followed by a Fellowship. For people who know they’re not where they want to be.

Core focus: Research; Writing

Specialty: Choose from one of our 20 Policy Centers

Clients: Undergraduate and graduate students who see the value in being a researcher for a semester before they start policy writing.If you do not know what you want to specialize in, you should take a semester and focus on what you truly want before you can brand your publications.This is the best of both worlds; you focus on defining your specialization and then go right into publishing in your passion field. It is considered to be the fast track to any International Affairs career.

Commitment: 15 months

Requirements:

  • Gain vital research skills vital to a productive career

  • Define a specialization, begin branding your career specialty

  • Attend 4 BIED Society conferences

  • Write 3 policy papers on a specific specialization, get published (3) times in the BIED Society REVIEW

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Description: This is our classic Fellowship program, and has been undertaken by most of our students. It is a scholarly writing-heavy experience on a specialist topic in international affairs.

Core focus: Writing

Specialty: Choose from one of our 20 Policy Centers

Clients: Graduate students, Graduate School Graduates, Professionals with 1-15 years of experience. They see the need for specialization and want to work hard to be a better professional.

Commitment: approximately 12 months

Requirements:

  • Attending 3 BIED Society conferences in the Washington DC area (or online)

  • Writing 3 policy papers on a specific specialization for the BIED Society REVIEW

  • Getting published as long as your work exceeds International standards

  • Presenting your research to your peers for review and feedback

Importance: The Fellowship grows individual skills; matures research skills; creates a history of publishing; builds a foundation for a specialization and begins to brand that specialty; builds a professional portfolio; bolsters confidence; and grows professional networks… all while having fun in a professional, supportive, positive organization.

Key Achievements for Clients:

  • Enhance your policy analysis and writing skills

  • Focus and refine your specialization

    Publish policy papers to begin establishing your specialty, brand, and portfolio

  • Develop important professional accomplishments to add to your resume

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Description: This is our new Fellowship program. It is focused on getting students overseas, seeing other cultures and experiences, and meeting new people. Students go on a conference cruise and focus on writing for our BIED Society's Global Comparative Journal.

Core focus: Travel; Writing; Policy Comparison

Specialty: Choose from one of our 20 Policy Centers

Clients: Graduate students, Graduate School Graduates, Professional with 3-15 years of experience. They see the need for specialization, want to work hard to be a better professional, and want to travel overseas.

Commitment: 18 months

Requirements:

  • Attending 2 BIED Society conferences, also known as Study Abroad Conferences (key Norwegian Cruises)

  • Writing 2 policy papers comparing one policy in three countries for the BIED Society’s Global Comparative Journal.  The papers are 20-pages APA articles for our flagship publication.

Importance: Regulatory Impact Analysis is a key skill for any policy professional

Key Achievements for Clients:

​Getting hired at a senior level requires having certain skills, this shows perspective employers that you have analyzed key policies and are competent in Regulatory Impact Analysis.  Not only do we want you to be an expert in your area of specialty, but as your career matures we want you to be an expert in policy, policy comparison, policy implementation, policy management, policy writing, & policy negotiation. ​

POLICY COMMISSIONERS PROGRAM

Description: PhD s will be asked to go abroad on the Study Abroad Conferences. This allows them to produce one individual paper and a second group paper on a key policy issue.

Core focus: Travel; Writing; Collaboration; Comparative Policy Review

Specialty: Choose from one of our 20 Policy Centers

Clients: Doctoral students, PhD’s, Post-Doc, tenured professors. The Program is reserved for mid-career faculty in international affairs or any of our Policy Center specialties. They have more policy publishing responsibilities, and less time to honor them. Our conference cruises reduce the time commitment, while allowing Clients to publish two papers, network with an international group of peers, and learn new skills to stay sharp in their field.

Commitment: 18 months

Requirements:

  • Attend 2 BIED Society Study Abroad conferences (on the Norwegian Cruise line) within 18 months

  • Write (1) an individual paper and write (1) a group paper for the BIED Society’s Global Comparative Journal.

  • Present your research to an international audience

Importance: This Program is perfect for Tenor Track professors and aspiring professors.  Our Policy Commissions bring in experts in vast areas of specialization to look at overseas policies.  By studying comparative policies a level of understanding happens which can then be used in your national pursuits.  We double the size of our normal publications from 10 pages to 20 pages and require one policy review over three or more countries.  Focus is on understanding key policies first and then helping to make them better.  This Program promotes career growth on many levels and encourages publishing, self-improvement, and collaboration skills at the national and international level.  It's important for tenured professors to get off their campus and test themselves, grow their networks nationally and internationally, and continue to stay sharp in their discipline while gaining new policy skills. 

Key Achievements for Clients:​

  • Publish two policy papers, one personal policy review & one collaborative Policy review

  • Learn from international peers, a local cultural perspective on international policies

  • Grow your network away from your campus, gain international professional connections

  • Gain Policy skills or sharpen them

  • Build upon your Publishing Plan Portfolio

Would you choose to go to DC for 2 days and get published – or would you rather go on a cruise to the Caribbean for 3 days, have a vacation, bring your family, meet peers, and get published?

SENIOR FELLOWS PROGRAM

Description: End-of career policy challenge. We will support end-of-career professionals to “write their book”.

Core focus: Writing; Collaboration, use of background writers if needed to expedite material publication.

Specialty: Choose from one of our 20 Policy Centers

Clients: End-of-career professionals. After an entire career, you surely have plenty to say, let us help you tell your story.

Commitment: 30 months max, usually completed quicker

Requirements:

  • Attending 4 BIED Society conferences

  • We will focus on four key components to writing your book with executive level support

  • Publish one Manuscript

  • Promote the Book release, create a marketing plan

  • Schedule a V-blog tour

  • Host a Release party

Importance: Writing a book, especially when you have not done so can be daunting and paralyzing.  Having a professional staff to work with you as you learn the publication, branding, marketing, and author profession can be helpful and rewarding.  It can also seriously reduce the time it takes to publish your manuscript.
