About the event

National Artificial Intelligence Conference Itinerary and suggested read aheads.

This years topic is important as the BIED Society hosts the National Artificial Intelligence Conference to prepare their working paper to Congress and other key players in the policy community.  This is a great opportunity to better understand the Policy implementation obstacles and discuss the options among a room full of elite Policy Professionals and Practitioners.  Government needs private input.

Congress 

On August 4th 2023, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) has released, Artificial Intelligence: Overview, Recent Advances, and Considerations for the 118th Congress.  It prioritizes three strategic concerns for Congress, (1) Healthcare, (2) Education, & (3) National Security.  Last month, CRS release a legal sidebar on Generative Artificial Intelligence andCopyright Law

Executive Office of the President

In July 2023, the Biden Administration convened representatives from seven AI companies—Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI—and announced voluntarycommitments from each of them “to help move toward safe, secure, and transparent development

of AI technology.”  The administration also released an AI Bill of Rights,

Supreme Court

Brookings Institute, last month, did a good overview of the recent Supreme Court activity.

International Organizations

UNESCO release, AI and the Rule of Law: Capacity Building for Judicial Systems.  AI-based technologies offer major opportunities if they are developed in  respect of universal norms, ethics and standards, and if they are  anchored in values based on human rights and sustainable development.

Foreign Countries

The EU released, EU AI Act: first regulation on Artificial Intelligence where they highlight AI systems falling into eight specific areas that will have to be registered in an EU database: (1) Biometric identification and categorisation of natural persons, (2) Management and operation of critical infrastructure (3) Education and vocational training, (4) Employment, worker management and access to self-employment, (5) Access to and enjoyment of essential private services and public services and benefits, (6) Law enforcement, (7) Migration, asylum and border control management, & (8) Assistance in legal interpretation and application of the law.
