While the relationship between China and North Korea has certainly been strained over the years - partially due to international pressure on China and North Korea's general refusal to acknowledge that pressure - the relationship between these two very much depends on ideology, even after many scholars have felt for years that China abandoned communism in every realm except its name under Deng Xiaoping. Ideology has taken a newly reborn place of importance in Chinese political thought under Xi Jinping. Following Deng Xiaoping's emphasis on economic pragmatism and opening the country to the world, economic growth and efficiency was a large, if not the only major, source of the CCP's legitimacy - especially following the events in Tiananmen, and with the Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward still fresh in the memories of many Chinese. However, double digit economic growth can't be sustained indefinitely, and under Xi Jinping ideology has been reestablished, though less radically, as one of the Party's key tenets. (The China Dream, for example.) As two of only five or so states that openly maintain ties to a communist foundation, China and North Korea both have a vested interest in maintaining a functioning relationship at the very least. For China to allow relations with North Korea, Laos, Vietnam, or even Cuba to decay to a dysfunctional state would be a concession against the country's national agenda that the ruling party of a one-party state simply can't afford. China's continued ambition to be a world player and regional hegemon will certainly push the CCP to write an agenda that acknowledges and emphasizes issues like the climate, human rights, etc. However, it will be interesting to watch how China will attempt to leverage that with maintaining vital ideological ties to one of its last Communist allies.
